Course Description

This course is a study of mathematics applications in the health sciences using arithmetic, algebra and statistics. Problem solving techniques will be illustrated to give students insight into the practical applications of mathematics in addressing real life problems.

Course Outcomes

At the completion of Clinical Mathematics for the Health Sciences the student will demonstrate that he/she has the knowledge to:
  1. Simplify algebraic and numerical expressions;
  2. Solve linear equations, exponential equations and practical applications;
  3. Model real life contexts using algebraic functions;
  4. Translate data among graph, table and list formats;
  5. Calculate measures of central tendency and variation for sets of data;
  6. Utilize descriptive statistics and the normal distribution to draw conclusions;
  7. Perform calculations requiring conversions within/between the metric and household systems;
  8. Calculate oral, parenteral and intravenous medication dosages;
  9. Determine adult and pediatric dosages based on body weight or body surface area.
